Abstract

Critical thinking skills are essential competencies for 21st-century students, and they need to be developed from elementary school. These skills play a crucial role in preparing students to face the ever-changing dynamics and challenges of globalization. Social Studies (IPS) learning has great potential in fostering these skills, but in reality, it remains conventional and memorization-centered. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Problem-Based Learning model on students' critical thinking skills in social studies through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. This study involved ten scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025 that were relevant to the topic. The review results indicate that the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model has a positive impact on improving students' critical thinking skills. PBL encourages students to be active, collaborative, and involved in solving real-life problems. Thus, PBL is recommended as an effective and contextual learning model for developing students' critical thinking skills, especially in elementary school social studies.
